Ava woke slowly, rising toward hazy consciousness. Her shoulder pulsed with fiery pain. She clung to that sensation, using it to pull herself awake.

She lay on a pile of furs before a softly glowing fire. The ice cave—Erik must have brought her back here, to safety.

Erik. Ava bolted upright, then instantly regretted it as agony lanced through her shoulder. She collapsed back, breathing hard.

"Easy." Erik's deep voice rumbled behind her. "You've lost a lot of blood."

He moved into her field of vision, face etched with worry. In the firelight, she could see dried blood matting his dark hair.

"You're hurt," she rasped.

Erik's mouth quirked. "So are you. The bullet went straight through, thank the fates. I've wrapped the wounds, but we'll have to keep close watch for fever."

He laid a gentle hand on her uninjured shoulder. "Rest now. You need to regain your strength."

Though her mind churned with questions, Ava could already feel herself being dragged back under. She forced out a single word before the darkness reclaimed her.

"Stay."

Erik's hand tightened briefly. "I'm not going anywhere."
